Understanding Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancers, affecting more than one million Americans every year. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their lives. Skin cancers are generally curable if caught early. However, people who have had skin cancer are at a higher risk of developing a new skin cancer, which is why regular self-examination and doctor visits are imperative.

The vast majority of skin cancers are composed of three different types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Spotting the Signs, Changing the Story

Each month, we share the number of skin cancers detected in our office to raise awareness and highlight the importance of early detection

Skin Cancer Screening/Treatment

Mooresville Dermatology Center offers full-body screenings for the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer as well as effective preventative care. Symptoms of skin cancer may vary which is why it is important to see a dermatologist when you notice a new growth or changes in existing moles on the skin. Early diagnosis is critical to the successful treatment of skin cancer. We recommend annual screenings.

Mole/Skin Growth Check

Mooresville Dermatology Center dermatologists are specially trained to perform thorough whole-body mole and skin growth checks to detect and treat skin cancers such as basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and melanomas. Moles are brown or black growths, usually round or oval that can appear anywhere on the skin. Most moles are harmless, but a change in size, shape, color, or textures can be indicative of cancerous cell growth. We recommend annual checks to monitor any changes.

Acne Treatment

Acne is a very common skin condition that affects both teenagers and adults. Although it can vary in severity, we know acne can be painful, distressing, and embarrassing. More severe acne can even cause permanent scarring. Many of our patients have tried over-the-counter regimens but do not find that they are enough to control the acne. We aim to target treatments to your particular needs, concerns, age, and lifestyle. Mooresville Dermatology Center offers many methods of treating acne including: oral medications, topical medications, chemical peels, and extractions.

Eczema/Dry Skin

Mooresville Dermatology Center offers treatment for eczema and dry skin to relieve the symptoms associated with severe itching and scratching that can lead to infection. Eczema is a general term used for several types of skin rashes, which share the common features of skin irritation, flaking, itching, and disruption of the skin barrier. Treatments range from lotions, creams, and cold compresses to corticosteroids, antibiotics for bacterial infections or oral antihistamines to control allergic reactions.

Laser

A tunable laser that is distinguished for its ability to gently resurface the skin removing years of sun damage as well as target moderate to deep wrinkles of the face, acne scars and healed post surgical scars.

We offer BroadBand Light therapy, BBL™, which is an innovative technology that sets new standards for treatment of skin conditions associated with aging, active lifestyles, and sun damage. BBL treatment is gentle, non-invasive and safe and allows us to precisely treat age and sun spots, small facial veins, rosacea, freckles, and acne. Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin type and your desired results.

ClearScan YAG™’s wavelength and pulse duration are unmatched for permanent hair reduction and vascular lesions such as angioma’s and facial spider veins/telangiectasias.

ClearScan YAG™ has strong absorption in oxyhemoglobin, resulting in selective heating of hair follicles, which produces excellent clinical results. The powerful contact cooling enables treatments to be safe for all skin types and tanned skin.

Unwanted hair can be a source of frustration and embarrassment, growing everywhere from upper lips and underarms to backs and bikini lines. And shaving, waxing and plucking only go so far before they’re needed again — which is why some people are seeking a more permanent solution.

BBL™ is an intense pulsed light system that can selectively target structures such as hair follicles. BBL™ permanent hair reduction is very effective for lighter skin types. The light used in hair reduction targets the pigment in the hair follicle, damaging the follicle and removing the hair.

Hair Restoration

Naomi Simon, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist, is excited to offer platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) for hair restoration. PRP uses the body’s own platelets to help encourage hair growth and restoration. PRP is an extremely safe procedure that can provide a natural and effective alternative to other pharmaceutical or surgical treatment options.

Dr. Simon offers PRP injections plus pharmaceutical-grade supplements for men and women with androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata. She uses the most successful PRP system available for hair loss today. All interested patients will be required to see one of our providers for a hair loss visit (insurance-billable), where we can discuss all possible options (including finasteride and Rogaine). If needed, we would be happy to refer you for our excellent PRP treatment!

Injectables

We can help your skin appear healthy and youthful with a variety of cosmetic services including BOTOX®, a popular treatment for facial lines/wrinkles. Overuse of muscles for facial expressions can cause frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines and wrinkles around the eyes. The injection of a small amount of BOTOX® into these areas causes weakness of the muscle which will improve the lines or wrinkles that the muscle action formed.

Dysport® is an FDA-approved injection treatment that reduces the appearances of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles on the forehead. Similar to BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport is injected directly into the site of wrinkles to prevent the underlying muscles from contracting. However, Dysport can diffuse muscles one to three centimeters from the injection point, while Botox can only reach as far as one centimeter, allowing for results that reach further areas with just a single injection. Our dermatologists at Mooresville Dermatology Center can recommend the best treatment for your particular needs.

Dermal Exfoliation

A gentle skincare treatment to remove dull, dead skin cells and vellus (also known as “peach fuzz”) from the face to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. Dermaplaning pairs well with our customized facials and Dermal Infusions.

This skincare treatment can be customized to address aging, acne and hydration. It simultaneously exfoliates and infuses conditioning serum deep into the skin.

This treatment is perfect for your skin’s monthly maintenance or when you want that glow for an upcoming event.

Collagen Stimulation

Platelet-rich plasma is developed by enriching blood with an autologous concentration of platelets. The preparation of PRP begins with whole blood, commonly obtained peripherally by venipuncture. It’s particularly good for people who suffer from rosacea or acne. An attractive component of PRP is its high concentration of growth factors, which can decrease healing time and increase collagen production. PRP is commonly used in conjunction with microneedling, Light Laser Peels, or CO2RE Fractional Resurfacing. After treatment, PRP is applied to the treated area, calming the skin. PRP stimulates collagen and elastin production, which thickens and tightens thinning skin, smoothing wrinkles and fine lines. Because it boosts collagen, it’s also a great treatment for improving overall skin texture and tone.

Sweat Reduction

No Sweat, No Stress. Dramatically reduce underarm sweat and odor permanently, immediately and non-surgically. MiraDry® is a safe, effective, non-invasive procedure designed to treat patients who experience excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis) or patients who just do not like to sweat. MiraDry®, which was approved by the FDA in 20111, uses microwave energy to destroy the glands (apocrine and eccrine) that produce sweat and odor in the underarm area. miraDry® is clinically proven to reduce sweat by 82% and odor by 89%, on average, however patient results and experiences may vary.
