PHC Research

Piedmont HealthCare is dedicated to improving health care in our community and advancing the medical field through clinical research.

Clinical Research

WHAT

Clinical trials are designed to collect pivotal knowledge about investigational medications, the effectiveness of medical devices, the potential for new cancer screening options that may benefit future patients and current research participants. The trials are designed to assess both the safety and effectiveness of a product and are conducted under rigorous U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. Information or data during the study is reviewed to ensure its safety or effectiveness. That data is then submitted to the FDA, which reviews the data and approves or denies a new drug, device, or test to go to market.

WHY

  1. Improving healthcare outcomes for patients
  2. Reducing the cost of healthcare to patients and across the system
  3. Improving patient engagement and satisfaction with their healthcare experience

By participating, you may contribute to the healthcare of tomorrow and take a step towards improving and educating yourself about your own health. You may have a positive impact on the health of millions — perhaps even your own friends and loved ones. Research studies can allow you access to medical options and medications not available through any other means. Compensation may be offered.

HOW

Piedmont HealthCare patients are eligible to enroll in clinical trials in a few different ways

  1. Review our clinical trials to see if any apply to you and your medical situation. Fill out an interest form. Our team will outreach you to let you know if you qualify to enroll. Our goal is to match patients with clinical trials that are right for you.
  2. Your doctor may talk to you about clinical studies or recommend you for a specific trial.
  3. Our research department may reach out if they feel you are a good fit.

Once enrolled in a study, there will be specific criteria and instructions to complete the trial.

FAQs

Are clinical trials safe?

Yes. Before starting the trial, you will be given an informed consent form outlining the details of the research study. This form includes information on why the study is being conducted, how long it will last, procedures you may need to undergo, contact information, risks, and possible benefits. In addition, as stated above, all clinical studies follow rigorous FDA rules.

How many studies can I be part of?

You can take part in as many clinical studies as you qualify for, but you can only be part of one study at a time.

Does PHC partner with medical research companies?

Yes. Piedmont HealthCare works with two trusted research partners on many of the studies we offer: Accellacare and Innovo Research. Both are verified partners who collaborate closely with PHC physicians. If you are contacted by them, you can feel confident the outreach is part of our clinical research program.

What if I don’t qualify for a study?

If you don’t qualify for a specific study, that’s okay. There will be other studies for you to take part in.

Are there questions I should ask before I say yes to a clinical trial?

• Why is this trial being conducted?
• Should I tell my family doctor that I’m part of a study?
• Does the new medicine treat any other conditions?
• Is there a possibility I will receive a placebo?
• Can I take my current prescriptions during the study?
• How much does the study cost?
• What if I decide I don’t want to be part of the study?
• How do I tell my friends and family about clinical research?
