SPRAVATO® is an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that is believed to work differently by acting on a pathway in the brain where glutamate, a brain chemical, works with other brain chemicals to balance well-being and depression

What to Expect

  1. The first step is a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for Spravato treatment.
During this time, ask any questions you may have.
  2. If you and the office decide to move forward with Spravato, a treatment plan will be put in place.
  3. Spravato treatment requires time commitment of 2 hours per treatment / 2x a week and a ride is required for each treatment
    1. Arrive at Mastor Mental Health and get settled in the treatment room. You will be laying on a comfortable chair for the duration of the treatment
    2. The spray is administered and you will be supervised for the 2 hours while the treatment is underway.
    3. After treatment, you will be groggy. You can’t do anything hazardous for the rest of your day. That includes operating a motor vehicle, so you’ll need someone to drive you home after treatment
  4. After 8 weeks of treatment, Dr. Mastor will determine the dosing frequency based on how you respond to it and how stable your response is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spravato is a brand name for esketamine. Distinguished from traditional antidepressants, Spravato acts on the brain’s glutamatergic system, providing a new pathway for addressing the distressing symptoms of TRD and MDD. Importantly, Spravato has been FDA-approved specifically for TRD and MDD with suicidality, underscoring its scientific backing and rigorous testing. This therapeutic innovation opens a new chapter in mental health care, particularly for those patients who have not responded favorably to conventional treatment options.

The administration of Spravato at our clinic involves a structured procedure, under the supervision of a healthcare provider, ensuring patient safety is at the forefront. As a nasal spray, Spravato provides a non-invasive and relatively quick method of delivery. Patients can expect a thorough explanation and guidance throughout their treatment journey, ensuring transparency, comfort, and peace of mind.

Many major insurance companies cover ketamine-based depression treatment if you haven’t gotten better after trying just TWO antidepressants.
