What is OMT?
Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) is a hands-on technique that manipulates and moves a person’s joints and muscles. This helps diagnose, treat, and prevent certain conditions. OMT can be an option for chronic pain. People who most often receive OMT are people with lower back pain or neck pain.
Who Provides OMT?
Dr. Shawn Walls, DO is a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), which means he is qualified to perform OMT. Dr. Walls has undergone specialized training, and has studied osteopathic techniques in the body’s musculoskeletal system that connect to the nerves, muscles, and bones.
How does OMT Work?
When performing OMT, a DO will use different techniques that stretch, move, and manipulate a person’s joints and muscles. OMT can often be split into three categories: Direct, Indirect and Combined. This involves the DO moving a person’s limbs into different positions. They may also apply pressure to limbs causing a person’s body to stretch muscles to properly align their joints. A DO can also use slow movements and continued pressure when performing OMT. They may also use sudden, quick movements. OMT is not meant to be painful. If someone experiences pain during an OMT session, they should let the DO know right away.
