Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy: Unlocking Health and Longevity

Can using bioidentical hormone replacement therapy be helpful in longevity?

As we age, our hormone levels naturally decline; but the impact of that decline goes far beyond hot flashes and night sweats. Our body begins to lose bone strength and muscle mass, as well as effects on brain health and cardiovascular function. Hormones play a critical role in keep our bodies resilient and vital. Since most of us will spend 40% of our lifespan in postmenopause, shouldn’t we be concerned more with our healthspan and not only our lifespan? That’s where bioidentical hormone replacement therapy comes in to improve the quality of our life as well as the length of our life.

How might BHRT support longevity?

1. Preserves Bone Density

Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all play key roles in maintaining bone health. Replacing these hormones to physiologic levels can reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, a major cause of loss of independence and decreased longevity in aging adults.

2. Supports Cognitive Function

Estrogen protects the brain and helps regulate neurotransmitters, supports blood flow in the brain, and may reduce inflammation. Several studies suggest that early use of BHRT may lower the risk of cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease when started early in menopause.

3. Maintains Muscle Mass and Metabolism

Testosterone and estrogen both contribute to muscle maintenance and metabolic health. BHRT may help to prevent the age-related loss of lean muscle, support weight stability, and improve energy levels.

4. Cardiovascular Health

Estrogen supports healthy blood vessels, improves lipid profiles, and help regulate blood pressure. There is growing evidence that starting BHRT in early menopause may reduce the risk of heart disease which is the number one killer of women.

5. Enhances Quality of Life

Beyond disease prevention, BHRT often improves sleep, mood, libido, skin health, and overall vitality. This is important for your healthspan, the years that you feel healthy and active. No one wants to live to be 100 years old and be in poor health for the majority of that time. We take BHRT for immediate benefits like helping with sleep and hot flashes but more importantly, as an investment in our future to live a healthy and vibrant life in the decades ahead.
