Did you know that an Ear, Nose, & Throat doctor can also treat allergies?
Most people don’t, and that is why we took time with Dr. Angelia Natili at PHC Ear, Nose, & Throat to answer some questions on the subject.
Q & A with Dr. Angelia Natili:
I thought ENTs only treat sinus or ear issues. Why would I see an ENT for allergies?
ENTs treat problems with the ear, nose, and throat both medically and surgically. We are the experts who can manage the whole problem with your breathing and sinuses, not just the allergy.
How do I know if my symptoms are due to allergies or something else?
Allergic patients have itchy noses, congestion, drainage, itchy watery eyes, that get worse when exposed to the allergens they are sensitive to floating in the air. If you only have congestion, it might not be allergy at all.
Is it worth getting tested if I’ve just been managing my allergies with over-the-counter meds?
It is, because then you can find out what is making you symptomatic and possibly be able to avoid it. On the flip side, I see many patients who have been told they are allergic and put on medications they don’t need. I am able to stop some of those unnecessary pills if we get negative testing.
What kind of allergy testing do you offer, and is it painful?
Skin prick testing is the gold standard for allergy evaluation. However, when we do the first part of that testing, the allergens are applied with a plastic multitest unit that does not have ANY needles. We also offer blood testing to characterize allergic sensitivities.
Do I have to take allergy shots forever, or are there other treatments?
Allergy shots are NOT forever. People get the maximum benefit when they undergo 3-5 years of immunotherapy. That course of treatment has benefit for 10-15 years! Depending on the allergic sensitivities, we also offer drops and sublingual tablets that are taken daily at home for those 3-5 years.
Can treating my allergies actually help my sinus or ear problems?
Absolutely!! Calming the inflammation caused by allergies can often resolve recurrent sinusitis without the merry go round of antibiotics. I have many patients who I only see once a year now because allergy treatment has resolved their nasal problems.
