What role does Testosterone play in women’s health?
We often hear of guys having “Low T” and needing testosterone replacement as they age to maintain their energy and muscles but the usual reason they seek it out is usually decreased sex drive and the dreaded, erectile dysfunction. But we usually don’t think of testosterone being a hormone that women need.
At age 25, a woman makes as much testosterone as they make estrogen but then the body’s production of testosterone starts to decrease in most women. This decrease in testosterone can leave them feeling that something is off. Symptoms of low testosterone in women are many:
- Low Sex drive
- Fatigue and low energy
- Decreased strength and muscle mass
- Weight gain, especially in the abdomen
- Depression/anxiety/irritability
- Brain fog/difficulty focusing
- Insomnia/sleep difficulties
- Joint and muscle aches and pains
- Decreased bone density
- Loss of motivation or confidence
Many women think this is a menopause thing, and it certainly can be, but many women will still be cycling and not even thinking about hot flashes and menopause and be suffering from low testosterone since much of our testosterone is produced in our adrenal glands, independent of the functioning of the ovaries.
Although there can be other health issues that can give you some of the symptoms in the above list, checking a testosterone level is a simple blood test that may give great insight into why these changes are happening. Testosterone supplementation is not just for the guys, we can also reap the benefits of a balanced hormonal system too. At The Women’s Center, we offer hormone therapy, not just for menopause but perimenopause as well. Currently we prescribe testosterone cream and pellets to help achieve an optimal testosterone level and the benefits it can provide.
